Japan stayed in isolation for many decades. In 1854 USA forced it to open to the world. Then Meji period commenced. This resulted in many reforms, among them common conscription and reforms of the army. Initially diferent European weapons were imported to Japan. There are French and British yatagans with Japanese markings. Honestly I am very cautious with them, being afraid they may be fakes.<\/p>\r\n
Murata bayonets<\/strong>.\u00a0 First regular Japanese bayonets were for Murata rifles. There were 3 distinctive patterns - 13, 18 and 22 (with two variants). The first was huge sword bayonets, made well out of good quality steel. Chequered wooden grips are unique for this model. The second was model 18, very similar in shape to Turkish M1887. Model 22 was small, tiny and delicate, almost as a toy.<\/p>\r\n Arisaka variants<\/strong>. There are numerous variants of Arisakas, differing in hilt and grips shape, pommel shape, crossguard, blade finish, blueing, scabbard shpae and material.
