Description

This is rare and poorly documented Mexican bayonet. In is not listed in any book known to me, but a few fellow collectors confirmed this pattern exists in some number.? In general apperance it resembles English yatagans. On the crossguard of this example is numer 1887 – if it is a date, it was a time when short and epee bayonets were trendy in Europe. It was a time when Mexico was independant and manufactured some weapons by itself.

There are letters “RM” on the opposite side of the cross guard – they stand for “Republica Mexicana”. They are separated with sign of liberty cap, or Phrygian hat – symbol of revolution or democracy. In Mexican version with sunburst from behind.

Any further info on this bayonet will be appeciated.
