France

France has produced the greatest variety of bayonets during it’s military history of XIX century. I’ll only confine to the pieces I own, not even try to cover the subject.
France was a home of yatagn bayonets, which were the mainstream of European bayonet design during the second half of XIX century. This first rare yatagan was model 1840 for rampart gun. Soon came next models with variations, and then the Chassepot bayonet which had been produce in tremendous quantities. Only to be soon replaced by Gras epee, then cruciform Lebels and finally sword/knife Berthier bayonet.

Variety is even greater when we look for hunting bayonets and for Defence Nationale bayonets manufactured ad hoc during Franco-Prussian war.

What’s strange, during first half of XX century development of new designs almost stopped.
